What is Teer?

Teer is a popular traditional archery game among the Khasi tribe of Meghalaya mostly played in the North Eastern States of India. It is a game of archery where people bet on the number of arrows that hit the target.

The game has two rounds: the first round (FR) is called the first house and the second round (SR) is called the second house. The first house starts at around 3:30 pm and the second house starts at 4:30 pm.  The teer target is a cylindrical bundle of hay, about 50 cm in diameter and 60 cm in height, placed at a distance of 50 meters from the Archers.

The archers have four minutes to shoot as many arrows as they can. The number of arrows that hit the target is counted and announced by a referee.

The last two digits of the total number are the winning numbers for that round. For example, if 1257 arrows hit the target, then the winning numbers are 57.

They use their dreams and intuitions to choose the numbers they want to bet on. Teer is also a source of income for many people who are involved in organizing, playing or betting on the game.

Teer is regulated by the Meghalaya Amusements and Betting Tax Act, 1982, which grants licenses to Teer clubs and Authorised Ticket Counters. There are about 12 licensed teer clubs in Meghalaya, each with their own target and archers.

The teer game is also played in other parts of India, such as Assam and Manipur, but with different rules and names.

History of Teer

Teer is a game that has a long and rich history in the Indian state of Meghalaya. It is believed that teer originated from the ancient practice of archery among the Khasi Tribe, who used bows and arrows for hunting and warfare.

Teer evolved from a recreational activity to a form of gambling in the 20th century, when the British colonial rule introduced new laws and taxes that affected the livelihood of the Khasi people.

Teer became a means of earning money and resisting the colonial oppression. The game was banned by the British authorities several times, but it continued to be played secretly by the locals.

After India gained independence in 1947, Teer was legalized by the Meghalaya government in 1982, under the Meghalaya Amusements and Betting Tax Act. Since then, teer has grown in popularity and scope, attracting players and bettors from different parts of India and abroad.

Teer is now a part of the social and economic fabric of Meghalaya and other north eastern states, as well as a source of pride and joy for the Khasi people.

The Khasi people have a strong connection with their culture and traditions, and they consider teer as a way of preserving their identity and heritage. Teer is also influenced by the Traditional belief and Mythology, which are full of stories and symbols related to archery.

One of the most respected deities in Khasi religion is U Blei Ka Blei, the god of archery, who is said to have taught the Khasi people how to use bows and arrows.

U Blei Ka Blei is the most important god in the Khasi religion, which is a form of animism that worships the supreme creator U Blei Nongthaw. U Blei Ka Blei is the son of U Blei Nongthaw, and he is the god of archery, hunting, war and justice.

He is also known as U Suidnoh, which means the lord of the arrows. He is depicted as a handsome and muscular man, wearing a crown of feathers and holding a bow and arrow. He is accompanied by his faithful dog, U Khynriam, who helps him in his tasks.

U Blei Ka Blei is the patron deity of the Khasi people, who consider him as their ancestor and protector. He is believed to have taught the Khasi people how to use bows and arrows, and how to live in harmony with nature.

He is also the one who decides the fate of the people, by shooting his arrows at their souls. He rewards the good and punishes the evil, according to his own laws and principles. He is highly respected by the archers and the gamblers, who seek his blessings and guidance before playing teer.

U Blei Ka Blei is also associated with various festivals and rituals, such as Shad Suk Mynsiem, which is a dance of thanksgiving and joy, and Behdienkhlam, which is a festival of driving away evil spirits.
